This session will explore the distinct trends and opportunities of urbanization across the MENA region and their potential to spearhead the evolution of cities worldwide. While urban development has not followed a uniform trajectory across the region, one unifying factor is that urbanization in MENA countries has not necessarily gone hand in hand with the economic, social, and environmental benefits typically associated with planned urban growth. At the same time, because MENA cities have been grappling with distinct and harsh environmental challenges and resource constraints, they also have the potential to emerge as global trailblazers for urban sustainability and resilience.
With continued population growth projected in MENA countries, leaders and experts are focusing on implementing policies and technologies to turn the region’s major urban hubs into digitally enabled, smart cities. As projects like Masdar City and Neom propose cutting edge visions for the urban future, what insights can be gleaned about how AI, the internet of things and clean energy tech can empower urban development and resilience? How are innovative cities addressing key global challenges from climate change to social equity to sustainable economic growth?
