How will efforts and trends to transition to renewable energy across MENA impact the region’s political economy and growth potential and the global energy transformation at large? Though MENA countries depend heavily on fossil fuels for energy supply, domestic consumption and economic growth, the region is also diverse and rich when it comes to renewable energy resources. Data suggests that the Middle East is the second most popular region for renewable energy investment after North America. Similarly, over the last decade, North Africa has managed to increase its renewable energy production by 40%, leading the continent’s energy transformation. How can governments, investors and the energy sector further accelerate MENA’s move away from fossil fuels? Given the region’s strategic advantage and investment in solar, wind and other renewables, this session will spotlight some of the innovative projects and technologies being pioneered and the promising solutions for scaling clean energy development around the world.
